Learn this CPR procedure in a four hour course, and be sure to recertify annually.

 Adult Procedure

Shake shoulders and shout.

If there is no breathing, apply CPR.

If there is no response:

  • Open airway
  • Listen, watch and feel for breathing
  • If patient is not breathing, start CPR

If no breathing, start CPR by:

  • Heel of hand in centre of chest
  • Compress at least 2 inches (5 cm) at least twice per second
  • 30 chest compressions – followed by two breaths
  • Repeat compressions and breathing until help arrives
  • Ratio: 30 compressions to 2 breaths
  • Rate: at least 100 compressions per minute

Infant and small child procedure

Same as for adults, except:

  • Support the infant’s head – slightly tilted back
  • Normal-sized breaths for children – smaller puffs for infants.
